“The Gospel of Grace Intensified” 

(Galatians 5:16-6:10) 

Four Important Verbs Concerning the Spirit

  1. “walk”
  2. “led”
  3. “live”
  4. “keep in step”

What This Means

  1. The desires of the flesh are not indulged. (5:16)
  2. The Christian is not obligated to the law. (5:18)
  3. Passions and desires are crucified. (5:24)
  4. The Spirit will be pleased. (6:8a)
  5. Eternal life will be harvested. (6:b)

Specific Application → 6:10

  1. Humility rather than conceit
  2. Encouraging rather than provoking
  3. Acceptance rather than envying

Theological Summary

  1. The Spirit has replaced circumcision as the “identity marker” of those who belong to God.
  2. The real proof of the Spirit within us is neither subjective, emotional experiences, nor supernatural signs, but moral, Christ-like attitudes.
  3. The secret of fruit-bearing is not to focus merely on better behavior, but to develop an awareness of the deity residing within us.
  4. Moral conduct is fostered by the Spirit, not the law.

4. Freedom in Christ is expressed in three ways: self-control, service, and solidarity.

“The Gospel of Grace Explained”
(Galatians 3:1-29)

Paul’s explanation of the Gospel of Grace begins by remembering four things:

  1. Remember How You Received the Holy Spirit (3:1-5)
  2. Remember the Story of Abraham (3:6-18)
  3. Remember the Purpose of the Law (3:19-25)
  4. Remember Three Consequences of Your Baptism (3:26-29)

Four Implications of This Text to Consider:

  1. Being “in Christ” is the essence of gospel proclamation and practice.
  2. Like Paul, our priorities must shift.
  3. Don’t trade God’s presence for rules.
  4. Galatians 3 emphasizes that Christianity is a religion built on relationships.

“A Sarcastic Salutation” (Galatians 1:1-12) 

The Importance of Galatians: 

1. It defines the nature of the gospel of Jesus.  

2. It describes the pattern of life that Christians should embrace in light of that gospel. 

3. It answers important questions about how Christians should view the Law of Moses in general and circumcision in particular. 

4. It outlines the basis of unity in Jesus and gives instruction on how issues of diversity ought to be handled and how to resolve conflict.  

5. It explains how to live in the grace of Jesus. 

An Outline of the Salutation: 

I. Paul’s Authority Is of Divine Origin (1:1-2) 

II. Salvation Involves Jesus’s Self-Sacrificial Deliverance (1:3-5) 

III. Deserting the True Gospel for a False Gospel (1:6-10) 

IV. Paul’s Gospel Is of Divine Origin (1:11-12) 

Points to Ponder: 

1. No one is immune from the temptation to pervert the gospel.  

2. Any so called gospel that minimizes the Christ is not a gospel of grace.  

3. Verses 3-5 should remind us not to get too comfortable in our present world. 

4. Some things are worth a rigorous defense. 

5. Seek God’s approval above all else.
